Prologue

Prologue:

“Don’t leave me…”

Eyes the color of a clear sky blue stared up at Daren with an expectant look. Feeling his gut tighten with quilt he looked away from his daughters tears. Then with a silent purpose he walked away from her, the one person in this life that he truly cared for. This shouldn’t be happening, he thought. I should have been given that reward money promised to me. But no I must go far away from here, away from the boss and that lying dirt bag Michal. For to stay here would be disastourus for his family and he feared that the truth would hurt them all too much.

“What shall I tell the misses, m’sier,” Mrs. Hosbei stepped out into the corridor waylaying his path towards the front door.

Glaring at her from underneath his hood he wondered how anyone could explain the mess that he was in.

“Nothing, tell her that I left too quickly without any word.”

Seeing the protest on her lips he gave her a level stare and said, “Understood?”

Realizing that she was about to overstep her bounds she whispered a vague understanding and then went off towards the children’s playroom.

With a last regret, of what could have been, Daren stepped out of the townhouse and into the busy streets of Cleveland with a heavy heart.

The silence from the servants said volumes as Clarisse Mills came home from her usual tea luncheon at Madamn Lorenzos place.

Seeing Mrs. Hosbei coming towards, instantly she felt the blood rush from her face, fearing the worst at the grim look on her maid’s face.

“What? What is it? “, She asked shrilly.

Shaking her head and pointy in the direction of the nursery she motioned to be quiet.

“We just got the little one to sleep all worn out from crying and all.”

Calming her anxiety with a deep breath she again asked Mrs. Hosbei what had had happened.

“ He left, my dear … In quite a hurry taking only the barest necessities… I believe that he is in some sort of trouble.”

Sitting down Clarisse closed her eyes feeling the tears gather under her eyes. So it had come to this. There was no explanation for all the strange disappearances over the last month. He didn’t even say goodbye. Last night had been wonderful but he still couldn’t divulge all his secrets. Because of that their marriage was failing and now he left.

“Did he leave a note behind like before? Or was he in too much of a hurry to be away from us.”

Mrs. Hosbei shook her head sadly affirming what Clarisse had already known deep in her gut.

Then the tears began to fall in silent streams down her face. So this was the end of Daren. She will never see him again she knew that with certainty. Just like she knew that there wouldn’t be a note this time.

“Momma?”

Clarisse looked down at the little hand gripping the fabric of her dress with a very sad but wise expression on her face.

“Its because the bad one will come for him, right Momma? He would have stay’ed if he could.. Daddy has to stay away…”

The truth in her daughters words made her reach down and hug her tight to her.

“Yes, Kayrie. Daddy must go and hide for a long long time now. We must be brave and pray for him every night…Now give me a smile and then off to bed with you… You evening nap isn’t over yet..”

Kayrie looked up, smiling, and said,

“Don’t worry Momma one day I’ll stop that bad one and Daddy will come home. You’ll see… Then we’ll be happy. You, me, Daddy and Rufus” Then with another smile in the direction of her beloved puppy Rufus, Kayrie scampered back to her room with a determined look in her eyes.
